2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Perhaps the first truly cosmic sci-fi film, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 spanned the entire history of the human race (and its alien mentors) with an experience that was both visually staggering and intellectually challenging. That jump cut early in the film -- from a primitive bone hurled into the air to a ship floating serenely in space -- still startles, but nothing is more stunning that the climatic, multi-dimensional trip through the Star Gate, which transports astronaut Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) to his destiny and the next stage in human evolution. 2001 is an utterly mind-opening film that addresses the big questions: who are we and what is our place in the universe?
