Paula Patton as Ms. Rain

A tough sit, that Precious. Everything on display is pathological and frightening. You want to turn your eyes from most of the abuse and agony on-screen. But then comes Paula Patton, filled with light, as the one adult who cares for Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) and who is, in the abused girl’s surprised own words, a “straight-up lesbian.” And she may be the most saintly, compassionate lesbian ever committed to film. Not that there’s been a lot of competition. But you get it.
