10 Movies That Prove Not All January Releases Are Stinkers

The Coen Brothers made a remarkable debut with this darkly comic neo noir that nods in the direction of James M. Cain with its ill-fated scheming love triangle and revenge plot. Playfully atmospheric (it was also the first major film for cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld), Blood Simple features a good mostly then-unknown cast, including a wonderful turn from character actor M. Emmet Walsh as a creepy private dick and Joel Coen’s soon-to-be wife Frances McDormand. Yes, slightly more than 25 years old now, but I wanted to start with a bang.
