Woody Allen’s rare foray into dramatic thriller territory, and his first European-set film, was an even rarer box office hit for him (it had a brief late December LA and NY opening but opened wide in January ‘06). The trailer received buzz from audiences for the stunning revelation that, after all the sex games and murderous impulses in England, it was in fact a Woody Allen Film. Aside from heaps of praise, it also had an impossibly sexy cast led by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The film owes a debt to Crime and Punishment as well as Allen’s own Crimes and Misdemeanors (without a funny side).
