The 15 Must-See Movies at the 2012 New York Film Festival

Holy Motors (dir. Leos Carax)

Holy Motors was also on our list of the most anticipated films at Cannes (as were other NYFF must-sees Amour and Like Someone in Love), but I’m more excited to revisit Leos Carax’s twisted meta-cinematic masterpiece than I am to see almost any other movie this year for the first time. Carax’s first feature since the '90s follows a man named Oscar (Denis Lavant) as he’s driven around Paris in the back of a limo, fulfilling nine mysterious “appointments,” the most explicable of which involves him wearing a mo-cap suit and making love to a CG water demon. An elegy for the cinema and extinct ways of seeing, Holy Motors is an irrepressibly insane modern classic.
