Guaranteed attention because of its source material, the mammoth bestseller by Dan Brown, Ron Howard’s film stars Tom Hanks as a professor of religious iconography and symbology who is falsely accused of murder as part of a conspiracy that may reach into the Vatican. The premise -- uncovering the secret story behind the Holy Grail about Jesus and Mary Magdalene as husband and wife -- prompted heavy criticism from the Roman Catholic Church. Ignoring that criticism, huge audiences were drawn to the movie.
