Leviathan (dir. Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel)

It takes some serious skill to make an observational documentary about sheep into a compelling two-hour movie, but that’s exactly what Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel did with their entrancing film, Sweetgrass.

This time around, the pair are taking a look at the chaotic world of commercial fishing, affixing a mess of small digital cameras aboard a pair of vessels and weaving together a characteristically raw but mesmeric portrait of a world that most people will never get to see for themselves. Already a hit at Locarno and Toronto, Leviathan might be one of the year’s most transportive movie-going experiences of the year.
