8 Great ... Long Distance Romances

Helene (Anne Bancroft) is a brassy New Yorker with a voracious appetite for books; the soft-spoken, very British Frank (Anthony Hopkins) runs a London bookshop. In the late 1940s, the two begin corresponding, and what begins as a purely commercial arrangement blossoms into beautiful friendship, with Helene sending birthday presents and care packages of foods that couldn’t be found in post-WWII England. While this one’s not a romance per se — Frank has a wife — the film (based on Helene Hanff’s non-fiction book) captures the intensity and ultimate possibilities of a really great pen pal.
