8 Great... Seafaring Movie Explorers in Honor of Columbus Day

While the various versions of Mutiny on the Bounty contrasted military shipboard life with a peaceful island paradise, this seafaring adventure concentrated solely on the price paid by lowly sailors trapped on board a ship captained by a monster (Howard da Silva). It's also a class-conscious film; here the contrast is between the officers (and passengers) and the common seamen, who must endure paltry provisions and harsh discipline. Alan Ladd, as the ship owner's playboy son who gets rounded up anonymously and unwillingly to slave on the ship, stands in for the common man who eventually rebels against the evil tyrant. Sometimes the price for adventure is too high.
